A small elven child wakes alone on cold stone under a strange island, in a world with none of the warmth the old one had. Chapter 2 is the walk out of that cave: learn to make fire and find food in volcanic jungle, learn at a waterfall that the strength you lost can be gathered back, and survive the two things hunting you — a wild-folk in the deep cave layers and a tracker whom something worse is riding. It ends where it has to end, at the edge of a village where people are still awake and the gongs are still playing. The route runs cave to cone country to falls to crater rim and down, and every step of it is played.
You come round on cold stone, in the dark, in a cave on a world you have never seen, with the one small familiar that fell through with you.

The chapter is one continuous climb from underground to the inhabited world, and it doubles back once. You start deep in Liang Bua Cave in the limestone karst of western Flores, work the fall-strewn ground along the crack, then climb out through the cave mouth into monsoon forest and up onto the ash and scree of the cone country under Mount Inerie, where the first fire and the first shelter happen. From the cone country you drop to the falls — the plunge pool, the black boulder cover along the approach, and the spray ring where the water gathers — and that is the guardian test and the first recharge. Then you go back down into the cave's deep layers for the stealth stretch and the trace on the stone, because the way into the deepest levels only opens once you can sense it. From there the route climbs again, up the ridges to the Kelimutu crater rim with its three differently coloured lakes, where the hollow offer is made and, in the waterfall caverns cut into the crater wall, the hunt corners and ends. Afterwards you carve the mark, come off the rim, and walk down through the forest edge into the lingko fields — the spider-web spokes radiating from their centre stone — to the village edge at dusk, which is where Chapter 2 hands you off.
